Abstract
"In the United States, there are approximately two million individuals with limb absence, which can be caused by limb loss or congenital difference. Of this group, approximately 25% of individuals experience upper limb loss or congenital difference (ULL/D). Those with ULL/D are clearly outnumbered by those with lower limb loss/difference, demonstrating that the majority of services and resources available are not for the ULL/D community. Those with ULL/D require specialized care and may benefit from peer support. To address this gap, the Unlimbited Wellness program was piloted by Dr. Debra Latour, PP-OTD, M. Ed., OTR/L, which is a virtual peer support group for individuals with ULL/D (Latour, 2019). Upon review of the success of this program, five Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) students at Western New England University (WNEU) expanded upon the Unlimbited Wellness program. Participant’s ages, level of ULL/D, and etiology were built upon to determine if an expansion of this program is beneficial to additional populations. Unlimbited Wellness ran for five weeks and data was collected and analyzed. The results suggest that the expansion Unlimbited Wellness was effective in educating and connecting individuals in additional populations."
