Abstract
"Early childhood mental health is a prevailing indicator of emotional and behavioral disturbances within the classroom. Children from impoverished communities are more likely to have behavioral and academic difficulties than children raised in higher income communities. Since parent’s are a key gatekeeper to treatment access, it is important to understand parents‘ views on the social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum provided to their children in preschool. The purpose of this project is to understand parent engagement in supporting social emotional learning at home. 3-parent training were conducted with the distribution of an initial survey and feedback survey. The surveys were distributed to determine each participants‘ confidence and the impact of the training. Results of this project showed an increase of confidence following the parent training. This project highlights the potential use of SEL parent training to increase their confidence in incorporating SEL into the home learning environment. Occupational therapy practitioners can support families by developing resources and parent training for carryover of SEL."
