Abstract

"Dementia is an umbrella term for a loss of memory and other thinking abilities that are severe enough to interfere with everyday life [1]. In the United States, there are 5.8 million Americans who are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, with this number being expected to rapidly increase to 88 million by 2050 [1]. Some of the challenges associated with dementia include a progressive decline in one’s ability to make decisions, communicate with others, and perform functional tasks [4]. One functional task often impacted by dementia is self-feeding, which is described as tasks associated with setting up, arranging, and bringing food or fluid from the vessel to the mouth [2]."
