Abstract
"Student-run clinics (SRCs) provide a multitude of benefits for the community as well as for students, and are highlighted for their unique way of providing accessible services to vulnerable populations, addressing barriers to healthcare, and promoting health equity for underserved or underinsured individuals. To achieve this in the community of Hampden County, MA, the developmental processes for the BEAR PAW House (Bringing Equity, Accessibility, and Rehabilitation to People Achieving Wellness) clinic was begun. A doctoral student within the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program (OTD) at Western New England University (WNE) co-embarked on a fourteen week Doctoral Experiential (DEx), performing extensive multidimensional investigations of clinic development. Specifically, the developmental focus of the student was recruitment and referrals. The purpose of this doctoral research was for the student to gain advanced knowledge in recruitment and referral processes in order to establish an effective, evidence-based plan for the clinic."
