Abstract

"The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends handwashing to minimize the risk of infection and the spread of viruses. This recommendation was prompted after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global pandemic following the Coronavirus outbreak. Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may present with having difficulties completing daily living skills, such as handwashing. Given the prevalence of Coronavirus, those working with individuals with ASD must be diligent with the teaching and monitoring of handwashing. The purpose of the present analysis was to identify a method for training staff members working with individuals with ASD to ensure thorough handwashing. Two treatment conditions were evaluated in the present study: one involved the delivery of a written task analysis to sequence a handwashing routine and the second involved the written task analysis from the first condition, paired with images modeling specific steps within the sequence. The delivery of the written task analysis was effective for two participants and did not require exposure to the second condition. The second treatment was evaluated with one participant only and was effective in increasing implementation of handwashing steps completed correctly."
