Abstract

"The present study assessed the effects of multiple exemplar training (MET) on acquisition of a generalized helping response to participants with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Two participants were taught to help others with various tasks using verbal and gestural prompting, video modeling, and differential reinforcement. Both participants learned to initiate helping responses in the presence of auditory, visual, and affective discriminative stimuli during teaching. Generalization of helping responses to untaught contexts (combinations of task type, variant, setting, and investigator) was assessed throughout the study. Ada was taught to help others in 15 contexts and helping responses generalized to 61 contexts. Leah was taught to help others in 10 contexts and helping responses generalized to 58 contexts."
