Abstract

"Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) have a long history of unfair exclusion from educational environments, especially at the post-secondary level (Johnson et al.,, 2019). Until the enactment of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1977, now known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), there was highly limited access to education at any level for individuals with disabilities (Kleinert et al., 2012). In recent years, while there has been further development of strong legislation to support individuals with disabilities and their pursuit of learning as well as a growing number of inclusive post-secondary educational (IPSE) programs, there is still an ongoing battle for true inclusion on college campuses (Francis et al., 2019). In addition to academic support, institutions need to place value on creation of supports that ensure students feel welcome accessing all areas of campus. Sense of belonging on campus can have a direct impact on the overall college experience for any student (Schroeder et al., 2021). The purpose of this research project was two-fold: (1) to gain insight into current perceptions and experiences that WNEU students had towards ID through distribution of a Disability Perception Survey and (2) utilize information gathered in a survey as well as via extensive research to create educational workshops on disability and inclusive practice."
