Abstract

"Due to the repetitive motions and stress manual therapist put on their joints they are at a high risk of work-related injuries. Performing soft tissue work, joint mobilization, and orthopedic techniques everyday results in upper extremity pain specifically in the joints of the wrist, thumb, and hand. The purpose of this study was to learn the root cause and effect of work-related injuries and pain that manual therapist experience. This qualitative phenomenological study involved a survey administered to a sample of 41 manual therapists including occupational therapists (OTs), occupational therapy assistants (OTAs), physical therapists (PTs), physical therapy assistants (PTAs), certified hand therapists (CHTs), and chiropractors, who utilize manual techniques. Our survey results concluded that due to the manual nature of their work and the demand of this profession work-related injuries and pain is high within manual therapists."
