The Western New England University Student Newspapers Collection contains newspapers written and published by the students of Western New England. Founded as The Nor’easter, students at Western New England University have been publishing their student run newspaper since its inaugural issue in November of 1935. The paper was renamed W.N.E.C. News from 1951-1964, then The Westerner from 1964 to the present day.
The student newspapers cover campus activities, sports, arts, and social events, and serve as a venue for students to express their opinions on matters related to both campus life, and the wider world.
Additionally, the newspapers reflect the changing student experience over the years. In early issues, student fiction and poetry was included. When Greek life was popular on campus, at least one page per issue was dedicated to fraternity and sorority news. In the mid to late 20th century, more editorial and opinion pieces dominated the paper.
