On September 20, 2017, Western New England University of Law School and the Institute for Legislative and Governmental Affairs hosted Dr. Alice Hearst as a featured speaker to commemorate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Professor Arthur Wolf gave opening remarks and introduced her. Dr. Hearst explores the question of whether or not the Constitution, as drafted in 1787, meets the United States’ needs in the 21st Century. During this divisive time, she encourages acknowledgment of the importance of basic inalienable rights and the continuance of the fight for full representation, justice, and equal access for all. In addition, she suggests citizens focus on what is missing, such as the rights that enhance autonomy and keep the state from interfering with lawful citizen actions.
