John Baick, Professor in the Department of History at Western New England University, was a Western New England University School of Law and Institute for Legislative and Governmental Affairs speaker on March 4, 2015. He spoke about the 50th anniversary of the commemoration of the Selma, Alabama voting right marches and the difference between commemorations and history. The film Selma has been a part of the commemoration process, as well as countless news stories and civics lessons throughout America. However, one must study the past to understand the present and anticipate -- or even shape -- the future. Selma is just one example of how we are forgetting our future.
