Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this capstone is to understand the psychosocial and sensory needs of pediatric oncology patients or survivors and educate staff members on the topics of psychosocial health and sensory regulation. It is also to discover how summer camp and activities offered are beneficial in decreasing signs and symptoms of decreased psychosocial health in individuals diagnosed with cancer or have prior history of cancer diagnosis.
Methods: Mixed methods surveys were conducted during the experiential portion of the capstone to identify the needs of individuals with cancer attending camp, benefits of camp, and identify staff member’s knowledge of topics such as psychosocial health, sensory regulation, and executive functioning. Participants were recruited via email and during an in-service provided to leadership members.
Results: A total of 16 participants filled out the survey about psychosocial health in children with cancer or have a history of cancer and how camp benefits this population. 6 participants participated in a pre and post-test survey during the in-service. Surveys demonstrated increased knowledge of topics as well as the benefits of summer camp on psychosocial health.
Conclusions: In conclusion, understanding and supporting psychosocial health and sensory regulation in children with cancer or history of cancer is an extremely important topic. Continually expanding knowledge on the subject matter will help individuals better support children diagnosed with cancer or history of cancer.
Keywords: children diagnosed with cancer or history of cancer, psychosocial health, sensory regulation, summer camp
